History Behind Khalifa International Stadium

The National Stadium, also known as the Khalifa International Stadium, is part of the Doha Sports City complex, which also contains the Aspire Academy, Hamad Aquatic Centre, and Aspire Tower. It is named after Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar's former Emir. The western side of the stadium is covered by a roof. It is Qatar's national football team's home ground.

Since 1976, the Khalifa International Stadium has served as Qatar's primary football venue. The stadium, which could initially hold 20,000 spectators, was created to serve as the premier venue for the 1976 Gulf Cup, which was hosted in Qatar. The stadium has been refurbished multiple times throughout the years, most recently for the 2006 Asian Games, when it was expanded to 40,000 seats. Khalifa International Stadium was originally offered as one of the playing venues when Qatar was granted the 2022 World Cup in 2010, though a major renovation was required. The stadium's improvements began in 2014 and included the renovation of all stands, as well as extra seating, hospitality facilities, and the building of a massive revolutionary roof that covers 70% of the stadium. The stadium was built in the summer of 2017, making it the first to be completed for the 2022 World Cup.
